FLEXIBLE URETEROSCOPY AND LASER LITHOTRIPSY

A special telescope was passed from the urethra, bladder and into the ureter at the location of the stone (or) to view the area of the interest. The telescope can be rigid (or) flexible. Flexible ureteroscopy is done with a very thin flexible telescope that can be done almost at 1800 turn to look back side on itself Flexible ureteroscopy can allows the entry into all main parts of the kidney by this every stone will be vaporised or removed provided they are of an perfect size and accessible.Flexible ureteroscopy can be used for the stones in the kidney and close by the kidney in the upper ureter. Flexible ureteroscopy is much gentle than rigid ureteroscopy.

HOW IT WAS DONE:

  • This procedure will starts by giving general anesthesia,

  • First telescope examination was performed to the bladder. A plan of the urinary system is formed by injecting a contrast (or) dye into the urinary system.

  • A telescope was passed from the urethra, bladder, ureter, till up to the kidney if required.

  • The next step is depending on the location of the stone and is there a need to attempt for breaking the stone or push the stone into the kidney for later treatment.

  • If an effort is made to break the stone, by using of lasers or small hammers they can vaporize or break a stone.

These are the main steps to be followed in the treatment of ureteroscopy

SUCCESS RATE: the success rate of flexible ureteroscopy is above 90%. Majority of the stones can be treated this way. But the success rate will depends on, how long the stone is been struck, the size of the stone or whether any previous surgery on the kidney is done earlier.

To reduce the risk factors associated with this procedure, patient need to consume more fluids, adopt a appropriate diet based on which type of stone is formed. Periodic X-rays and ultrasound may determine if further or more stones are being formed.
