Penile implants are the devices which are placed within the penis to permit men with erectile dysfunction (ED) to get the erection. Penile implants were usually suggested after other treatments for ED fail. These devices were either inflatable or malleable. The easiest type of prosthesis comprises of a pair of malleable they are bendable rods, which are surgically implanted inside the erection chambers of the penis. With such type of implant the penis will be always semi-rigid and simply requires to lifted or adjusted in the erect position toward commence sex. A penile implant was generally used when there was a clear health cause for ED and when this problem was unlikely to improve or resolve naturally or with other medical treatments. Occasionally a penile prosthesis was implanted when the surgery to reconstruct penis when scarring have caused erections to curve.
PROCEDURE:
A penile implant operation takes about 1 hour and is usually performed in an outpatient center. A man will resume to sexual intercourse by 6 weeks after surgery was done.

The inflatable penile prosthesis comprises of 2 attached cylinders they are: pump and reservoir which were placed by surgically in the body. The 2 cylinders were inserted in the penis and connected by a tube to a divide reservoir of saline.

The reservoir was implanted below the rectus muscles in lower abdomen. A pump was also connected to the site and system below the loose skin of the scrotal sac, in between the testicles.

This penile prosthesis was referred as a 3-piece inflatable penile prosthesis, because of the 3 different components. A 2-piece inflatable penile prosthesis comprises of only 2 components: that are attached to the cylinders and the united reservoir and pump unit.

Instead of the reservoir been placed behind the groin, it was combined with pump in one of th housing unit which fits conveniently in the scrotum. The benefit of 2-piece prosthesis in that was the surgery will take shorter time & less complicate & there was no device part in the abdomen.

The drawback of the 2-piece prosthesis was that smaller reservoir cannot result in required erections in some men.

To inflate the prosthesis, man requires to press the pump. This pump will transfers saline from the reservoir to cylinders in the penis, inflating them and cause an erection. Pressing on a deflation valve at base of the pump may return the fluid to reservoir, deflating the penis and returning it to normal flaccid state.
