NEPHROSTOMY

A nephrostomy was an artificial opening which was created between the kidney and the skin that will allows for the urinary diversion straight from the upper part of the urinary system. A nephrostomy was done when a blockage keeps urine from passing the kidneys, through the ureter and in the urinary bladder. Without other way of urine to drain, pressure could rise inside the urinary system and the kidneys could be damaged.

PROCEDURE:

  • Before the procedure, a fine tube (cannula) will be inserted into a vein in the arm. Sometimes a drip (infusion) was attached to the cannula to supply fluids.

  • From the cannula, they will pass some intravenous antibiotics to decrease the risk of getting an infection. And may also be gives some sedative to help patients to relax, generally patient asked to lie flat on their stomach on the x-ray table.

  • When patient were at comfortable positioned, the surgeon will injects some local anesthesia into the skin on the side of patients back. Once the area was numb then the doctor gently inserts a small needle in the kidney and puts a guidewire by the needle.

  • The surgeon will use the guidewire to place the nephrostomy tube in the exact position in the kidney. This tube will kept securely in the same place with stitches so it doesn’t come out and was connected to the bag outside in the body that will collects the urine.

  • When the nephrostomy tube is put into the kidney it will hurt a little for short time. For this doctor may be prescribe a painkiller by the cannula in the arm.

Patients possibly have some blood in their urine (haematuria) for the first 2 days after the nephrostomy procedure was done. The area in which the tube was inserted will be bit uncomfortable so doctor will prescribe some painkillers regularly to reduce the pain. This may usually resolves down after a week or so.
