RADICAL CYSTOPROSTATECTOMY

A cystoprostatectomy or cysto-prostatectomy was a surgical treatment and the procedure involves where the urinary bladder & prostate gland were removed. The procedure combines a cystectomy & a prostatectomy. Laparoscopic surgery was increasing among the urologists as it was minimally invasive treatment & may now be able to treat neoplasms of the pelvic organs. Before starting the surgery, staging with CT scans done to the chest, abdomen, & pelvis with intravenous contrast needs to be done to rule out the metastatic spread & assess local extent of the disease. Laparoscopic radical cystoprostatectomy may be an choice for the patients who are experiencing invasive bladder cancers or recurrent high-grade superficial bladder cancers. Even though, if a patient’s cancer has been metastasized(spread to any other parts of the body), this method cannot be recommended. The method was currently restricted to the patients who are suffering with a small-volume bladder cancer without extravesical involvement or pelvic lymphadenopathy on the abdominal CT scan (computed tomography). We are capable to construct a neobladder (new bladder) by using a segment of the small bowel, by implementing pure laparoscopic techniques exclusively.

PROCEDURE:

  • Prior to surgery, doctors will test to confirm that the cancer has not spread away from the bladder & prostate. Additional testing will be performed to check if you are having any risk for comorbidities like heart & lung disease.

  • During the laparoscopic radical cystoprostatectomy, your doctor will remove the bladder & prostate by creating so many small incisions or cuts (this was less traumatic compared to an open surgery & will help to heal better).

  • After being removed, your doctor will have several choices to create a new bladder (neobladder) from the existing tissue. It was important that you need to ask your doctor about the specifics of the operation because all patients are different.
