TRANS RECTAL ULTRASOUND FOR PROSTATE (TRUS)

A transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is an ultrasound procedure which is used to view the man’s prostate & surrounding tissues. The ultrasound transducer (probe) will sends sound waves by the wall of rectum into the prostate gland, which was positioned directly in front of the rectum. TRUS can also called as prostate sonogram or endorectal ultrasound. A TRUS may be performed to:

  • To determine if the prostate was enlarged or not

  • To diagnose the prostate cancer

  • TRUS was performed if the doctor guess the presence of cancer because of the increased prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, abnormalities felt when digital rectal examination (DRE) or some symptoms occur like problems with urination.

PROCEDURE:

A TRUS is generally performed as on outpatient method in the doctor’s office, clinic or hospital. The test generally takes 15–30 minutes time.

  • Some special preparation was needed prior to TRUS. Avoid consuming Aspirin and other medications that can thin the blood for 7–10 days before the test. An enema was used 1–4 hours before starting the procedure this is used to clean out the colon.

  • The patient will be asked to urinate because to empty the bladder just before the procedure.

  • Patient need to wear a gown while the surgery was going on. He usually lies on his left side with the help of knees bent toward the chest.

  • A protective cover & lubricant was kept on the ultrasound transducer (probe), then after that it will be located into the rectum.

  • Patient will feel pressure or they will have sense of fullness in the rectum when the transducer was in that place.

  • The transducer will direct the high-frequency sound waves to the prostate.

  • A computer analyzes the echoes were produced by the sound waves & displays an image of the prostate gland on the monitor.

  • The images will show how big the prostate is and to check whether there were any abnormalities.
